As it turned out, the very subdued-arts center crowd was perfect company for a set-list with emphasis on the mellow and a "healing" front-woman. Chit-chatting with the audience, directing sing alongs, helping someone propose to his girlfriend, showing up on drums for a few songs during Jason Collett's opening set(the girls in front of us felt pretty stupid for talking through his set after he thanked her for sitting in) - all contributed to the creation of a loose and friendly vibe. Feist's skills as an artist, singer, guitarist, and all around entertainer are abundantly clear. Seeing her perform live is a very enjoyable experience. Jules and I don't make it out together that often at this stage of life - so this made the payoff all the more satisfying. The night brought back fond memories of western Ontario and my time at the Wex. As I pondered all that is the Canadian musical renaissance these days, I couldn't help thinking back to the MuchMusic playlists of the late 80's. Back then it seemed that nothing of any kind of quality came from north of the border (save Neil Young - but he doesn't count cause he lives in Northern Cali). It was comical to watch - like a Christian music video channel - all imitation no innovation. It's not Triumph, Rush, and Tragically Hip anymore. Nowadays it's like auto-cred to be a cannuck. I've always loved the fishing, the beer, the provincial parks, the northern lights, and Kids in the Hall. Well that nation's indie-rock has remained safely on my "list of things I like about Canada" for most of this decade now. Feist is at the top of that list.

where were you when moment...

i was at the local grocery store with my mom. i was 7 years old. they announced it over the public address system. people were stunned into silence. my mom got really serious. it was probably my first experience with grief. elvis was a regular part of the fox residence. my dad would put on a stack of elvis records and work around the house. he had this big old tube amp and very large solid wood jensen speakers. that warm sound would envelop the entire house. that voice, that sound, the charisma visible in performance and films, provided some of the best memories of my life. elvis was important because he was experienced and enjoyed with people that were the most important to me, and he was important to them. i remember being confused and little unsure, but it was clear that these people believed that he was gone....

Thanks Jack White - 70's Rec Room Soundtrack

<img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; record Icky Thump for a week or so. the association with the aforementioned recreational spaces is strong. this time out the Jack/Meg pull heavily from all of that 70's sound. a few years back think i called elephant their "zeppellin album". that description was about 4 years premature. the references are pretty blatant "english/scottish folk", heavy handed slide riffs, country inflections, bigdrums. jack white is jimmy page&robert plant, he's angus young&bon scott, he's keithrichards&mickjagger, - all packed into one person and sprayed across these 13 tracks liberally (even a little eddieVH&DLroth on this one (rag&bone - recognize this riff and attack?)) . put simply - it's great fun listening to this record. maybe it's the proximity of columbus & detroit? but i'm still drinking the red and white kool-aid (even if originates in nashville these days).

perhaps the most remarkable thing about the Wstripes is their staying power and their fan base. they are the rare exception of a band who's appeal crosses many barriers. when i was working at the arts center in 2000 - all of the art types (undergrads, grad-students, curators) were in love with them. a Wstripes release is a cultural event. all the fashionable types that i work with these days are talking about this record, sharing it, and name dropping it. all the magazines have to cover it. whether you're headed out tonight to whole foods, the 9:30 club, your local starbucks, or your town art museum - you're probably listening to Icky Thump right now. me? i'd prefer shag carpet, wallpaper, and onkyo amplifiers for my listening experience.

MIA and her Zubaz greenscreening in jamaica

this thing can be watched a few times. go here The side project of Dan Boeckner (the WP singer with the Beck-esque sound) is called Handsome Furs. The sound is minimal and repetitive - by design. It might not be the most accessible stuff, but Boeckner's ability to take a verse melody into a chorus melody is omnipresent (same as WP). I don't mind hearing stuff over and over when it's dialed in like this. For some strange reason, it's not easy for semi-famous Canadian musicians to get visas - so their US tour has been canceled for the time being. Exploring West Hollywood has lost most of its fiz. Dinner isn't the same - scoffing at the folks standing outside Doughboys or Toast is lame when your alone. I head off to grab something from the market and I see a flier promoting a Pixies documentary. At this point I know nothing about it - I assume that it's one that I've seen before, nevertheless I depart for Arclight cinemas. It's gotta be better than sitting around a hotel in beverly hills right?

AFI Music Documentary Series presents "loudQUIETloud: A FILM ABOUT THE PIXIES"

I show up late. They don't take cash. "here go ahead, it's on us, you better hurry, you've missed the first 10min."!?!? The theatre is packed full, they're checking tickets, there's a very familiar looking bald guy (the thin one) standing against the wall near the entrance, and I realize that I've stumbled upon something important.

The documentary covers the 2004 Pixies reunion tour. The film provides some fantastic biographical material. We see Frank Black and family at the pumpkin patch, Joey Santiago spending dinner time with his family via internet camera phone, the Deal sisters discussing Kim's strategies for staying clean during the tour, and David Lovering's attempts to cope with his father's terminal cancer and eventual death. The film contains numerous performances from various cities and all shot with multiple cameras (in the QandA following the film, the creators mention that they have 300+ hours of live performance from the tour.). The on stage sequences are astounding. A conscious decision was made to follow the band on stage during these shows. We see and feel the reception that the band received an places like Brixton Academy and Fine Line Music Cafe. Having followed the 2004 warm-up tour vicariously on the internet, I sit alone in the theatre and smile as I watch and experience the reunion tour from the band's perspective. So many moments worth commenting on from this film, but one of the most enduring images for me is Kim and Franck pre-show - the first show of the warm up - in Minneapolis. Their nervous, Kim appears downright scared, and Franck is doing his best to calm her, "it's a warm-up show, everyone will understand, don't worry about it." The performance is breathtaking. The crowd is hysterical. We return to the dressing room post-performance and Kim and Franck are in a state of shock. We watch as they process what's just taken place. Kim asks - "Do you think they are all going to be this way?" They are more surprised than anyone. I've not seen a more poignant moment in a music documentary (there are many others of similar caliber throughout the film). We see the band experience the much deserved and long overdue recognition (and gratification) that blossomed in the spring/summer of 2004. It starts in places as unassuming as Saskatoon & Eugene and opens more fully and completely at Coachella (no footage - the festival wouldn't allow them to film).

So it's enough for me. The film has that rare quality - like a perfect day that you don't want to end. I'm so completely blown-away by what I've stumbled into on my last night in LA - my expectations have been exceeded. It takes a few minutes for house lights to be brought up. I notice that they are setting up seats down in front. The lights come up for question and answer time with the filmmakers (sweet! and being taped for IFC). Two two empty chairs remain? These are reserved for Joey Santiago and David Lovering. QandA ends up and the crowd is handed wristbands and directions to the after party with the filmmakers and band members. This concludes my stay in LA.
loudQUIETloud

work trip

<img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; fader think, this is the best "commercial-radio" station in the nation indie 103.1 as a result of this find, i'm now neglecting everything else that i could listen to. the shows & personalities can be engaging. they seem to blow-off their podcasting & other technology (this is no KEXP.ORG). it acts like a public station (kind of). it's something else really. personality driven - a college style radio station programmed by celebs. big biz cashing in on internet music and indie rock probably. they display an appreciation and understanding of LA music pedigree (a most endearing quality in my opinion). a punk show, a metal show, a steve jones show, and a sometimes funny show on monday nights - feel my heat . in the end it's not unlike the rest of the city - trendy, smug, and painfully self-aware, BUT you can hear "billy squire" alongside bloc party, the rakes, or cypress hill. few experiences can compare to blasting "the stroke" while driving your rental car after dark in sunset strip traffic.

*more to come

a bad night turned into some fine moments with milo

<img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; - so this is love - hear about it later). hard to believe the obscurity of these considering their importance at the time (you would've had been a regular viewer from 1981-82). bootlegs of the show have been around forever, but i've heard that VH plans to release it in some kind of box this year (a cue from led zeppelin probably). these are low-fi, roth is.. roth, and one cuts out prematurely, but they effectively capture one of the most powerful and popular live rock bands ever.

heavy lifting

<img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; on at Little Brothers a few weeks back. I could attempt a bit about the "mythic" status he holds in indie rock - but this has been done to death. Google it if you want it (GBV nostalgia). What I can say is that I witnessed a most impressive display of alcohol consumption. Seriously, this was easily on par with the "mezcal nights" of old (you know who you are). Bob Pollard holding a a half-gone bottle of liquor and admonishing the crowd, "there comes a time when you have to put away the toys kids". That is a priceless moment. I'm pretty sure that I witnessed a medical miracle - a true scientific impossibility.

Bob and his band managed to rattle out 43 songs (including a 9 song GBV encore), most of which were thoroughly enjoyable. It was fun like a mid-80's husker du or replacements show. I can't describe the ethereal qualities of the unspoiled alternative rock scene from back in the day, but I can provide you with an image from this show that evokes that era. A bunch of Bob's peeps from the old days in Dayton showed up to the show (apparently Columbus was as close as the tour will get to his hometown). These guys were as old as Bob and they looked it. Picture your dad on stage at little brothers-norm from cheers-dale earnhardt type shit-mullets-old high school football jerseys. It was feet on the ground, here's a shout out to my boy buffalo over here, kind of shit. It was that homeless guy at all the punk rock shows back in the day. It was totally devoid of pretension. It was just a middle aged drunk guy from the midwest having a party with his old high school buddies. It's just that this midwest guy is a rock n' roll genius. An indie rock patriarch. This kind of humanity is absent in today's scene. 43 songs for 16 bucks? that shit would cost more than twice as much on itunes.

a bubble machine?

http://www.carllewis.com/video.music.1.html

exhibit b: why this genre has so much promise

Brokeback To the Future

buzz-hype-a-gator YYY's style

In a matter of weeks the Yeah Yeah Yeahs will release their second full-length album, Show Your Bones. It's been three years since the release of their first full-length - though that's not say that the 3 persons responsible for that work haven't been productive. The ubiquity of the YYY's is impressive on a few levels. OK, maybe there is a grand plan here and i'm just a vacuous sucker. If this is the case then this is buzz creation of the schrewdest sort. Maybe this is just the way the game is played in our day and age. It's a lot more fun than having jan wenner put your balls in everyone's face and your cred isn't destroyed as fast. Seeker savy types knew all of this shit yesterday, so at the risk of sounding so last minute, here's my take:

Guitarist Nick Zinner published I Hope You Are All Happy Now. This is one of the most powerful rock n' roll documents (he prefers to call it an art book) that you're likely to put your eyes on. It resides comfortably among important pieces like Get in the Van, End of the Century, Instrument, and Another State of Mind. It's a contemporary rock n' roll document - which enhances its value. Zinner provides us entry into live rock/punk/art culture and reveals what those elements look like today. Zinner's also doing a thrash project HeadWoundCity. Like my old man used to say, "that son-of-a-bitch is a doer todd, a goddamned doer!".
Drummer Brian Chase formed another trio, the seconds - affording him a more straight ahead approach to punk-rock drumming. A YYY's live show quickly reveals the importance of his contribution (there isn't much room to hide in a trio). It's clear that Chase is an accomplished musician with a unique ability to fill space and provide rhythm, so it's not surprising that he's looking for opportunities to extend his activities.
Vocalist Karen O partnered with - Adam Spiegel aka Spike Jonze & Sam Spiegel aka DJ producer Squeak E Clean (producer of new record) to create Hello Tomorrow for Adidas. The spot has everything that you would expect from Jonze - dreamy narrative, breathtaking cinematography & color, and claustrophobic spatial representation. Beneath the Jonze vision is the equally dreamlike sound of Karen O's soft voice paired with Clean's delicate instrumentation.
Finally, there have been a few attempts of the "more blatant" buzz creation variety. Squeak E Clean appeared on MTV and made up a bogus story about the new record being a concept album about Karen O's cat (snubbing your nose at MTV News is standard issue I suppose) More importantly, a Diplo remix of forthcoming track Gold Lion has surfaced. This may appear risky, but giving him remix dispensation on a track that no one has heard? That's got to bea good play these days. Nothing says "did you hear..." like a Diplo remix

So though it would make a nice little case study for a Media Studies seminar at the New School (i'll teach that fucker), it's also a major lift to the credibility of these 3 individuals. Me, I'm damn happy to be strung along by the hype-aggator here lately. I'm actually looking forward a new record release for a change.

please make it stop!

i'm all fucker-ed up by this contraption. whatever you do, don't start fooling around with it when you have respectable work to do...
http://hype.non-standard.net/

scenester tracking

Tracking the cultural affections of scenesters has been an interest of mine for as long as I can remember. Boyhood trips to the nearby record shop were driven observational interests. Sure I'd buy stuff, but what I really wanted was to figure out what people were into. This was much easier in the early 80's. The record shop guys didn't change the decorations or the sounds very often. The radio station didn't add new artists. The initial shock and awe that was my first 8 hours in front of MTV, though traumatic, had a strengthening effect. My first post-MTV trip to the record store would be a revelatory experience. The record clerks that I had held in high esteem, lording over the marantz and perched on their raised checkout counter, were totally confounded by my new requests. On its face it seemed like disinterest or condescension, but looking back I think they knew they were vulnerable. "Who the fuck is U2? What's it called, Boy? We don't sell shit like that. REO Speedwagon"Good Trouble" - that's a killer release. Cultural trends and tastes move with unimaginable velocity today. "Fifteen minutes" may have seemed fleeting in 1968, but those numbers practically constitute a movement when you consider the cultural attention span and high-speed acquisition of knowledge of today.
"I'm losing my edge to the Internet seekers who can tell me every member of every good group.." james murphy

millers

she's a friend that i haven't seen since high-school, and we're getting reacquainted tonight. i've made myself scarce in this relationship for a long time. i was a a two-faced teenager. too self-conscious to be seen with her in the halls. a sophisticate can't stoop that low. i might even slander her when i had the chance. she's was an easy target after all. i knew her well enough to score points with a joke or two at her expense when in the proper company. you get the picture. social climbing can make the best of us act with treachery.

i was way off (again). my weakness has robbed me of the enjoyment that comes from an easy and affordable friendship. i didn't call upon this old friend, or so much as look her way, for at least a decade, and yet tonight we're hanging together by the moonlight and it's just lovely stuff. my old man had many capabilities. one thing he could do beyond anyone that i've known was enjoy beer. he possessed enlightened taste. a chemist always considers the recipe. that he could toggle betweeen imports and lo-fi domestics troubled me for many years. didn't he know? couldn't he discern the differences? what kind of man was he? well this evening i understand the man a little better. thanks to my time with this old friend.

*millers - a friend from high school used to say, "let's get millers". this would drive me crazy. why did he use plural?
